Tablets and smartphones have a lot of similarities, but as this infographic by Usability 24/7 shows, the way that users make use of these devices is very different.
In the UK, 71% of smartphone users use their devices at work, while 62% of tablet users use their devices at night. Understanding what users want from each product is essential to good usability design. As multi-screening (using one or more screen at the same time or sequentially) is becoming more prevalent, smartphone and tablet designers also need to devote more resources to maximizing functionality in conjunction with other products. This is a great example of how usability doesn’t end with the product itself. It can have a wide-reaching effect on a variety of aspects of the user’s life, and usability designs need to recognize this fact.
