Most of us would consider it practically impossible for the blind to safely drive cars, but Dennis Hong doesn’t seem to think so. In this video, he discusses his work on creating a car for the non-sighted. One of the greatest challenges Hong faced in designing a car for the blind was adapting existing technology used in self-driving cars to give non-sighted drivers control and autonomy. This is an excellent example of how technology should be designed to maximize usability, rather than coming up with a concept first and forcing the user to adapt. Hong’s work embodies the importance of always putting usability first, even if you need to come up with new technology to do it.
